Quake III Arena was developed by id Software in 1998, and is the first game in the id Software franchise to include multiplayer. Quake III Arena features first person shooting and a two-dimensional, isometric plane for the player to move around in. The game requires the player to locate and defeat the opposing team, by navigating around the arena and trying to locate and kill all of the competing agents. Most of the time, agents are trying to kill the opposing team, while also defending themselves from being killed by the opposing team. These agents are known as “hosts”, and they are able to respawn anywhere within the map. In order to prevent the opposing team from killing the host while they are respawning, the opposing team must first locate and kill the host, before the host respawns. The player must defeat all of the opposing team’s remaining agents before they respawn, or after enough time have passed, the agents will respawn and will be given a full health bar, making them harder to locate. If the player is not successful in killing all of the opposing team’s agents, it is possible that they may be killed by the opposing team before they respawn.
To achieve victory in Quake III Arena, the capturers must be able to locate and defeat the team defending against them. To do this, the capturers need to have a strategy for how to position themselves in order to maximize their chances of killing a defender before they are killed by the defender. A capturer’s strategy consists of a series of actions, where each action may be taken at any time. While an action may not necessarily be taken immediately, every time an action is taken, the capturer might incur a penalty. The penalty may include a delay of a few seconds in order for the capturer to decide what action to take next, or may be the cost of a shot (a shot cost a small amount of energy), which can be used to shoot at a defender.
In multiplayer, one agent is considered the “capturer”, and they try to kill the opposing team while defending themselves from being killed by their teammates. To successfully win the game, all of the agents on the opposing team must be killed by the capturers and no agents from the opposing team can kill capturers. The capturers and the other agents on the opposing team are considered the “defenders” of the opposing team.
I also have the Demo version, and it works fine. You can play the levels at levelworld.org. The levels are not good, but you can get an idea of what the game is like. If you download the original Quake 3 from the Ubuntu Software Center, it will just play the demo level. I believe you can get Quake III for $10-$15, as well. 827ec27edc
