Documentary favorite Katherine Monk (China Daily) will deliver the opening remarks on the first day of the festival. The festival will also feature Q&A sessions by New York Chinese film director Deng Chao on Sunday, Jan. 21, and director Bruce Lee on Monday, Jan. 22. The first-ever New York Chinese Film Festival will screen a selection of 20 movies from China and Hong Kong in nine theaters across New York City, beginning on Friday, Jan. 18 and running through Tuesday, Jan. 23. The festival, which honors the 50th anniversary of the 1966 Cultural Revolution in China, is sponsored by the Chinese American Arts Council and the New York Chinese Film Festival Foundation, with the support of the New York Chinese Film Association. The festival will screen over 180 films from mainland China and Hong Kong, including 35 feature films, 12 documentaries and 12 shorts. Other films will be shown at the festival include The Story of Qiu, Live and Let Die, Shanghai Express, The Mission and Viva Satire, among others.
The film also generated wide media attention in Asia. Numerous websites in Malaysia, Taiwan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, and elsewhere covered the film extensively. Ip Man won the Best Film award at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, which has a track record of awarding the Best Film award to nine other Asian films in the last ten years, including Shutter, The Banquet, Chasing the Dragon, and Old Boy. In addition, Ip Man was awarded the Best Film and Best Actor awards at the Hong Kong International Film Festival and the Best Film award at the Asian Film Awards. The International Film Festival of Mannheim-Heidelberg presented its Grand Prix to Ip Man, along with its Special Jury Award to the director, producer, and screenplay writer of the film, Stephen Fung, Ang Lee, and Jacky Ip, respectively. The first-time director of Ip Man was also awarded the Italian International Prize.
