Gallop Racer 2004's most notable new feature is the addition of a new mechanic. By jacking up your horse's propulsion, your speed and stamina are boosted. In the past, you could increase these stats, but you could only reach them by sprinting for as long as you could. Now, stamina is increased simply by jack-hammering your horse, and speed is boosted by a combination of sprinting and galloping. These stats also apply to your opponents, so any racer can gain an advantage by jacking up their horse's stats.
Gallop Racer 2004 is a dull, occasionally tedious experience. While the new mechanics and enhanced stamina are welcome, they're outweighed by the series' dated charm. The only other notable addition is a timing system that will trigger when you're behind by the number of points indicated on your stopwatch.
If you've played a Gallop Racer title in the past, there are a few new wrinkles to the gameplay. First, this time, you can remove your horse's hind legs and reattach them at a later point -- a choice to make or not to make will affect how long it takes to reach the finish. This is less of a change than the other new feature, which sees galloping in completely different directions. When galloping forward, you're on a straight path; when you steer left or right, you'll follow a curved path. There's a bit of confusion on your first run, with your path creating a loop in some situations and a straight line in others. However, the design has been tweaked to allow for clear sailing in the latter cases. Regardless of your path, you can still backtrack and reattach your hindquarters at any time, though doing so will slow your horse down.
As in previous titles, your horse can be purchased from a shopkeeper for 500 silver tokens. Then, if you own a fish, you can add a goldfish to your stable. You can have a maximum of three fish at a time; you can never have more than two galloping at a time (so you'll have one in your lead foot and one in your hind foot). As with the horses, jacking up your fish's stats will enhance your speed and stamina. You can also jack up the stats of your other horse -- the one in your lead foot, usually -- though to make an impact, you'll need a goldfish in your stable.
The multiplayer mode makes Gallop Racer 2004 more of a challenge than its predecessor. Up to four people can play against one another at once, each taking turns controlling a single horse. The four horses are arranged either side-by-side or in a straight line. Attack points are distributed differently for the different positions, which forces players to adapt to the situation at hand. Players also have to watch out for one another's horses, because they can occasionally fall out of position for no apparent reason, which can be very disorienting if you're not on top of your game. If you fall behind, your opponent can easily pick up the advantage, and you have to run fast to catch up. 827ec27edc
